Anushka
London via Brighton duo Anushka are the brainchild of Victoria Port (singer-songwriter) & Max Wheeler (producer). With influences from Detroit Hip Hop, Chicago House and 2000s RnB, their hybrid sound is hard to pin down but designed equally for the sound system and the reflective post-rave solace.
With serious support from Annie Mac both on her Radio 1 show and a slot at her AMP festival, an album on Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood Recordings, a Boiler Room set as well as supporting the likes of Kaytanada & Jungle and a full UK tour with Gorgon City, the last couple of years have taken the duo all over the world, from Siberia to Vietnam, Via Texas and all points European.
They have played many festivals including Glastonbury, SXSW, Worldwide, Outlook and Ibiza Rocks. They have also had across the board radio support from Huw Stephens, Phil Taggart, Alice Levine, Toddla T, Moxie and Skream on Radio 1, Jamie Callum on Radio 2 as well as specialist plays from other DJs like Monki, Target and Jamz Supernova on 1xtra as well as Mary Anne Hobbs on 6 Music.
Their first Album ‘Broken Circuit’ released in 2014 was critically acclaimed. The Guardian described the track ‘Atom Bombs’ “Like Jill Scott or Erykah Badu going techno” and BBC Arts said “If the current wave of dance is to consolidate its success, bands like this are what we need. This is a brilliant album” as well as further excellent coverage online from ID, The Fader, Dazed Digital, Pigeons and Planes, Stamp the Wax and ‘The Line of Best Fit’ who described their music as “drawing on the UK’s rich heritage of scattered snares, sub low rumble and breakbeat culture, Brighton-based duo Anushka, produce the kind of sun-tinged electronica that make you feel as if you’ve been transported to Garland’s The Beach.”
